Local Art

by Erin on May 10, 2012

I’m working with Avenue for the Arts to coordinate this year’s Street Market. Take a look at this Artist Profile by our Vendor Coordinator, Alaina Clarke.

A whirlwind!

by Erin on April 30, 2012

I’m beginning to get involved with some inspiring local initiatives. In addition to my board seat with the Chamber Choir of Grand Rapids, I’ve recently begun to work with the Division Avenue for the Arts group, first participating as a trolley guide for their Art.Downtown event, and now working on the committee to plan this year’s Division Avenue for the Arts Street Market, happening on June 9.

There are lots of opportunities to get involved, as a volunteer, exhibitor, or even as a performer if you’d like to showcase your individual or group talents. Feel free to get in contact with me if you’d like to help!

My Textbooks Have Shipped!

by Erin on April 23, 2012

The Summer semester begins in two weeks exactly. I’m REALLY excited. I’m not afraid to admit that I’m nervous, too. It sure seems like a big step to take!

Have you recently had an exciting, nerve-wracking experience? Share some techniques you used to channel that energy in the comments!

Traveling with dogs

by Erin on April 19, 2012

I decided to bring the dogs (all 280 lbs of them) up North with me, so I won’t be visiting The Stream today. Hopefully soon!

Co-working in Grand Rapids

by Erin on April 18, 2012

What are your favorite co-working spots in Grand Rapids? What about locally owned coffee shops with wireless?

So far my picks include The Sparrows, The Omelette Shoppe on Michigan, Arnie’s Kafe (hopefully the construction ends soon!) and the Chapbook Cafe at Schuler Books & Music on Alpine. Today I’ve decided to camp out at the Big Boy on 28th Street. It’s been quiet so far this morning and the coffee is pretty good!

I’m also thinking about swinging by The Stream in Newaygo on the way “Up North” to visit my mom tomorrow.

I’d love to hear your top choices, and maybe run into you soon!

Blah blah blah

by Erin on April 18, 2012

I had a long overdue moment of realization yesterday as I was paging through my new “601 Spanish Verbs” book.

“Hablaba” (The H is silent) means “(S)he was speaking.”

A Better Idea

by Erin on March 27, 2012

The following tweet about using spy software against your employees popped up in my twitter feed this morning. Maybe it wouldn’t have bothered me so much if the tone wasn’t so flippant and condescending.

If you’re spying on employees because you’re curious, you’re creating a toxic work environment and ruining your relationships.

If the spying is warranted, especially on a large scale, you need to take a good look at your hiring practices and the values with which your company is being branded.

Hire people you trust to get the job done ethically, then let them do it without spying on them.

It’s not a new tool, but it’s always pretty and insightful. Here’s my word cloud created from my twitter timeline via Wordle.

Add Something to your To-Do List

by Erin on March 19, 2012

I read recently that the longer your to-do list, the more you’re likely to complete.

Here’s a challenge: Add a small item from a large project you’ve wanted to get started on but haven’t for some reason to your to-do list. Report back by the end of the day with what you added, what you accomplished, and if you feel like you’ve made progress.
